Box with Imperial Eagle Figures
A sculptural box adorned with double-headed imperial eagles
This sculptural box was developed as a study of heraldic form and the architectural presence of symbolic figures. The double-headed imperial eagles, positioned at the corners, define the object’s identity and introduce a sense of symmetry and tension. Their upright posture and mirrored orientation create a structural rhythm that frames the box as a compact sculptural composition.
The piece was crafted entirely in the Kostylo Warsaw atelier using traditional metalworking techniques. Each eagle figure was hand‑chiselled, refined and silver‑soldered, allowing the form to emerge gradually through repeated shaping and surface work. The contrast between the matte silver-plated figures and the gilded body of the box introduces a dialogue between texture, tone and material hierarchy. This interplay of surfaces is central to the object’s visual language.
The work continues my exploration of historical and heraldic motifs interpreted through contemporary craft. The imperial eagle – a symbol associated with dual perspective and authority – is treated here not as an emblem but as a sculptural presence. Its form is simplified, disciplined and integrated into the architecture of the box, allowing the figures to function as structural guardians rather than decorative additions.
Although the object retains a functional format, its primary intention is sculptural. It belongs to a series of works in which containers serve as frameworks for artistic investigation, enabling material, symbolism and form to converge in a single hand‑shaped piece.
