Art Deco Brass Buckle – Casting and 23-Carat Gilding
From Raw Brass Casting to a Gilded Sculptural Form
The visual language associated with Coco Chanel has long been a source of inspiration for Kostylo Atelier. This interpretation explores the relationship between recognisable symbolism, flowing Art Deco forms and traditional metalworking techniques.
The process began with the creation of a model, subsequently cast in brass within the atelier. The raw casting required extensive manual refinement to establish the intended contours, remove surface irregularities and define the flowing sculptural form.
Following the initial grinding, the brass surface was progressively refined by hand using abrasives ranging from 180 to 800 grit. Copper plating was then applied to provide an additional layer for surface correction, allowing small imperfections and casting porosity to be addressed before final polishing.
The copper-plated surface underwent further sanding and polishing to achieve a uniform, reflective finish. Careful attention was given to the curved contours and transitions between raised and recessed areas before the application of 23-carat gilding.
The completed gilded brass composition was developed as a decorative buckle for a dress or skirt belt. Its flowing form reflects an Art Deco influence, while the polished gold surface emphasises the sculptural movement of the design.
The finished object is presented against striped flint, a natural stone distinguished by its contrasting, rhythmically layered structure.
