Sculpture of a Great Dane
Lost-wax cast brass with hand-applied brown patina
This sculpture represents a life-size Great Dane cast in brass using the lost-wax method. The form was modelled and executed in the Kostylo Atelier, where the anatomical structure and posture were resolved through a sequence of manual refinements. The surface is finished with a hand‑applied brown patina that emphasizes the volume and musculature of the figure.
The proportions follow the natural scale of the breed, allowing the sculpture to read as a full spatial presence rather than a decorative miniature. Edges, transitions and contours were shaped to maintain clarity of silhouette from multiple viewpoints. The patina introduces tonal depth, softening the metal while preserving the precision of the cast.
The piece is conceived as a study of mass, posture and character. The stillness of the form contrasts with the inherent dynamism of the breed, creating a tension between representation and sculptural abstraction. The work is intended to function both as an independent object and as part of an interior environment, where its scale establishes a strong architectural anchor.
