Modern Inkwell for Smartphone and Pen
A sculptural inkwell built from hand-cut 3 mm brass with striped flint inlay
This inkwell was constructed from 3-millimeter brass sheet, measured, cut and shaped entirely by hand. Its geometry is intentionally restrained – a compact architectural block designed to hold contemporary tools while maintaining the weight and presence of a traditional desk object. The form is defined by its edges: every line, angle and junction was resolved through repeated cycles of filing, soldering and refinement.
The striped flint inlay introduces a mineral counterpoint to the polished metal. Its layered structure breaks the strict geometry of the brass, adding a geological rhythm to an otherwise disciplined form. Selecting the right fragment of stone required a long process of comparison, as the scale and orientation of the bands had to align with the proportions of the inkwell.
The gilded surface, finished with 23-karat Italian gold, creates a reflective plane that emphasizes the object’s mass. The silver-soldered joints remain hidden within the structure, allowing the form to read as a single, continuous volume. Despite its contemporary function, the piece carries the weight of traditional metalwork – a deliberate contrast between modern use and classical craft.
The inkwell is housed in a custom dark-green wooden case designed specifically for this object. The hinges and clasps, shaped and gilded by hand, are part of the work rather than accessories. The interior is lined with white satin, creating a quiet environment that protects the polished surfaces and the stone inlay.
This piece belongs to a series in which functional objects are treated as sculptural studies. The inkwell explores mass, proportion and the meeting point between contemporary utility and manual craftsmanship.
