Modern Wall Clock with Striped Flint

This clock was constructed around a single piece of striped flint – a stone whose layered structure dictates the rhythm of the entire composition. The mineral surface, with its alternating bands, introduces a natural geometry that becomes the foundation for the object’s visual order. Rather than treating the stone as ornament, the design positions it as the central architectural element.

The gilded frame and bar‑shaped indices were shaped and finished by hand in the Kostylo Warsaw atelier. Their strict geometry contrasts with the organic stratification of the flint, creating a dialogue between controlled precision and geological irregularity. The tempered and milled glass was selected to maintain clarity while adding a subtle depth to the frontal plane.

Although the clock incorporates a quartz movement, the mechanism remains secondary to the material investigation. The piece is less a timekeeping device and more a study of how stone, metal and light interact within a restrained format. The hand-engraved Kostylo mark is placed discreetly, functioning as a quiet signature rather than a focal point.

As with all works from my atelier, the clock is housed in a custom wooden case lined with satin. This outer structure is designed not as packaging but as a protective environment that respects the object’s material character.

This piece belongs to a series in which rare stones serve as anchors for contemporary metalwork, allowing geological time and crafted form to coexist within a single, disciplined composition.
