Classic Desk Inkwell for Smartphone and Pens
A gilded brass form with striped flint centerpiece
This inkwell is constructed as a classical desk object, built from hand‑worked brass and finished with 23-carat Italian gold. At its center sits a selected fragment of striped flint, a mineral rarer than diamond and valued for its singular, unrepeatable pattern. The stone introduces a geological counterpoint to the disciplined geometry of the metal.
The piece is made using techniques rooted in 19th‑century goldsmithing. Every surface, edge and junction was shaped manually in the Kostylo Atelier in Warsaw. The process involved repeated cycles of measuring, cutting, soldering and refinement, allowing the form to read as a continuous, unified volume rather than an assembly of parts.
The gilded surfaces create a reflective plane that emphasizes the object’s mass and classical proportions. The striped flint inlay acts as the visual anchor of the composition, balancing the polished metal with a mineral structure shaped over millions of years.
The inkwell is housed in a custom dark‑green wooden case designed specifically for this object. The hinges and clasps, shaped and gilded by hand, are integrated into the design rather than added as accessories. The interior is lined with satin to protect both the gilded surfaces and the stone inlay.
This piece belongs to a series in which functional objects are approached as sculptural studies. The inkwell examines proportion, material contrast and the meeting point between classical craft and contemporary utility.
