Belt Buckle “Large Butterfly”
A sculptural butterfly buckle with hand-cut brass wings and mirrored striped flint
This sculptural buckle was built around the geometry of a butterfly’s wings – not as an ornament, but as a study of symmetry, tension and mineral reflection. Each wing was hand- cut from brass sheet, shaped through repeated cycles of filing and sanding, and then silver‑soldered into a unified structure. The form retains traces of manual shaping, giving the butterfly a quiet, organic rhythm.
The striped flint stones were selected specifically to create a mirrored pair. Their natural banding allowed the wings to gain a mineral axis, turning the buckle into a dialogue between crafted metal and geological structure. No two stones share the same pattern, and achieving a symmetrical match required a long process of choosing, rejecting and re-selecting individual fragments.
The gilded surface introduces a warm, reflective plane that contrasts with the cool, layered stone. This contrast is central to the object – the butterfly becomes both delicate and architectural, suspended between organic softness and material discipline.
Although the piece adopts the format of a belt buckle, its intention is sculptural. The butterfly is treated as a small autonomous figure, shaped entirely by hand in the Kostylo Warsaw atelier. The work belongs to a series in which wearable formats serve as frameworks for exploring form, symmetry and material presence.
