Royal Eagle Head Letter Opener
A sculptural letter opener cast as a single form with a hand-chiselled crowned eagle
This letter opener was conceived as a ceremonial object, shaped around a crowned eagle head carved directly into metal. The entire piece – blade and handle – was cast as a single solid form, allowing the sculpture to emerge from one continuous volume of brass. After casting, the object was refined through extensive hand-filing, chiselling and surface work, giving the eagle its precise contours and the blade its clean, tapering line.
The crowned eagle is treated not as an emblem but as a sculptural figure. The modelling of the beak, feathers and crown was developed gradually through repeated cycles of manual shaping, creating a presence that anchors the entire composition. The blade, in contrast, is intentionally restrained – a single uninterrupted gesture that balances the detailed modelling of the head.
The surface is gilded with 23-karat Italian gold, giving the form a warm reflective tone that emphasizes the transitions between polished planes and chiselled textures. The gold does not function as decoration; it stabilizes the object visually, giving the eagle a quiet, authoritative presence.
The letter opener is housed in a custom dark‑green wooden case designed specifically for this piece. The hinges and clasps – shaped, fitted and gilded by hand – are part of the work rather than accessories. The interior is lined with satin, creating a calm environment that protects the polished surfaces and reinforces the ceremonial character of the object.
This piece belongs to a series in which functional tools are reinterpreted as sculptural figures. The crowned eagle transforms the simple act of opening a letter into a small ritual, merging gesture, symbolism and the discipline of metalwork into a single, unified form.
