Monumental Brass Chandelier with Four Wall Lamps
A large-scale brass lighting ensemble developed as an architectural composition
This monumental brass chandelier was developed as the central element of an architectural lighting composition that also included four matching wall lamps. Measuring 200 cm by 80 cm, the chandelier was conceived not as an isolated fixture, but as a structure intended to define the rhythm and scale of the surrounding interior.
The brass construction was formed and refined entirely by hand in Kostylo Atelier. Its large circular elements were heated, shaped and brought into proportion through successive stages of manual work. The surfaces were then filed, sanded through multiple grades and polished by hand to establish a continuous reflective finish across the structure.
The chandelier was developed together with custom-made shades whose proportions were resolved specifically for the scale and geometry of the metalwork. Rather than functioning as applied accessories, the shades form part of the overall composition, balancing the mass of the brass and distributing light across the structure.
Four large wall lamps were created as part of the same commission. Their proportions, brass construction and custom shades were developed in direct relation to the chandelier, allowing the lighting throughout the interior to function as one coherent visual system.
Installed within the interior of a historic townhouse, the ensemble creates a relationship between handcrafted metalwork and architecture through repetition, scale and material continuity. The chandelier establishes the central axis of the composition, while the wall lamps extend its rhythm across the surrounding space.
The project was developed through one continuous atelier process, from initial concept and metal forming to surface refinement, polishing, shade development and final installation. Its scale required traditional metalworking methods to be applied across an architectural structure rather than a small decorative object.
Today, the ensemble remains part of the Heritage Archive, documenting an important stage in the atelier’s exploration of large-scale architectural lighting and coordinated brass compositions.
The result is not simply a chandelier accompanied by wall lamps. It is a unified lighting ensemble in which brass, proportion and illumination become part of the architecture itself.
