Polar Bear Figurative Box
A sculptural box shaped as a polar bear in motion
This sculptural box shaped as a polar bear emerged from an exploration of movement, balance and the quiet presence of animal form. The figure of the bear walking across an abstracted plane of ice became a way to study gesture and weight distribution within a compact, functional object.
The piece was shaped through a sequence of traditional metalworking processes carried out entirely in the Kostylo Warsaw atelier. Hand-soldered elements, engraved details and the final gilded surface reflect the discipline and patience required to achieve a coherent sculptural form. The contrast between the polished metal and the softened anatomical modelling introduces a subtle tension between material precision and organic expression.
The work continues my ongoing interest in symbolic animal figures interpreted through contemporary craft. The polar bear – often associated with endurance and solitary strength – becomes here a quiet, contemplative presence rather than a literal representation. Its form is meant to hold space, not to dominate it.
Although the object retains a functional aspect, its primary intention is sculptural: a study of form, material and gesture shaped through manual work. It stands as one of the early explorations in my atelier’s series of small sculptural containers, where utility becomes a framework for artistic investigation.
