Figural Cherub Chandelier (2007)

Designed, sculpted and handcrafted entirely in the Kostylo Atelier

This figural chandelier with three cherub figures, created in 2007, is one of the earliest and most defining works in my sculptural lighting practice. Conceived as a fully original project, it was developed from the first sketch through modelling, lost‑wax casting, assembly and final finishing – all executed by hand in my atelier.

The three cherubs were sculpted manually and cast in solid brass using the lost-wax method, allowing for precise facial expressions, anatomical detail and subtle gesture. After casting, each figure was hand‑chiseled and polished to reveal the nuances of the modelling visible in the photographs.

The chandelier’s arms were heated to high temperature and shaped by hand, giving them their organic, flowing lines. Decorative elements – leaves, vines and classical motifs – were chased and refined manually, then joined to the structure through traditional metalworking techniques.

The chandelier features five points of light arranged symmetrically around the figural core. The entire piece was patinated to a noble old‑bronze tone, with selectively polished edges that reveal the warm glow of brass and emphasize the sculptural character of the form.

The photographs show the cherubs seated back-to-back, the elaborate arms with botanical ornamentation, and the warm candle‑like light that brings depth to the relief and a ceremonial presence to the object.

Today, I consider this chandelier a milestone in my artistic development – a work that marked the beginning of my later series of figural chandeliers and sculptural lighting pieces.
