Figural Chandelier “The Musicians”
A monumental 2008 brass commission with a lost-wax cast musician figure
In 2008, I was commissioned to create four monumental chandeliers for a single, vast and exceptionally tall room inside a historic townhouse. Each chandelier was intended to stand in one of the four corners of the space, forming a sculptural-lighting composition that defined the entire architecture of the interior.
Every chandelier was meant to be unique – each with a different musician, cast in brass using the lost-wax method, each with its own instrument and character. The piece shown here was the first in the planned series.
The chandelier measures 170 cm in height, including the chain. The central musician figure was fully modelled and cast by me, and all ornamental elements – as well as the figure itself – were gilded and finished by hand. It is a work that carries my design, my craftsmanship, and my signature.
Then the 2008 financial crisis arrived. The project was frozen – not due to lack of resources, but because the world, for a moment, stopped breathing. Out of the four planned chandeliers, only one was completed.
For my atelier, this piece holds a special place – it is one of the first sculptural works I created on this scale. Looking back, I can clearly see how much my technique, precision, and materials have evolved over the years. This chandelier remains a witness to that early stage: ambition, risk, and a story interrupted just before it could grow into something larger.
Sometimes one object speaks louder than an entire collection.
