Crowned Eagle – Figural Letter Opener
A ceremonial object in sculpted brass, figurative form and 23-carat gold
Crowned Eagle was conceived in response to the gradual disappearance of character from everyday tools. As objects become increasingly efficient, discreet and interchangeable, their function often remains while their physical character is gradually diminished.
The letter opener offered an opportunity to reverse that condition. Rather than allowing function to disappear into a neutral form, Crowned Eagle gives it a figure, a gesture and a distinct presence. The familiar act of opening correspondence becomes an encounter with an object intended to be noticed, handled and remembered.
The blade and figural handle were developed as one continuous form, allowing the crowned eagle to emerge directly from the structure rather than appear as an applied ornament. Function is not concealed beneath sculpture. It is absorbed into it.
The eagle is modelled through the head, beak, crown, layered feathers and elongated wing structure. Its form gradually transitions into the blade, creating a continuous movement from figuration to function.
After casting, the surface was extensively refined by hand. Filing, chasing and repeated correction of the modelling defined the contours of the beak, feathers, crown and wing, while preserving the distinction between polished planes and more textured areas of relief.
The blade remains deliberately restrained. Its long, tapering geometry creates a visual counterweight to the concentrated detail of the eagle, allowing the composition to move from sculptural density towards a single precise line.
The crowned eagle was approached not simply as a heraldic motif, but as the source of the object’s presence. Its posture, profile and vertical crown establish its character, while the extended wing and blade introduce direction and movement across its full length.
The entire object was finished with 23-carat Italian gold. The gilded surface responds differently across polished and hand-worked areas, allowing light to reveal transitions within the modelling rather than covering the form with a uniform reflective finish.
A custom dark-green wooden presentation case was created specifically for Crowned Eagle. Its satin-lined interior protects the gilded surface while establishing a controlled setting for the object.
The hinges and clasps were shaped, fitted and gilded by hand as part of the same material language. Their geometric forms create a deliberate contrast with the figural modelling of the eagle and transform the case from packaging into an extension of the work.
Crowned Eagle belongs to the Functional Objects section of the Collection, where familiar tools are reconsidered through sculptural form, symbolic presence and traditional metalworking.
The result is not simply a letter opener. It is a response to the idea that utility must be anonymous. Crowned Eagle restores figure, ceremony and authorship to an everyday gesture, bringing function and sculpture together within a single gilded form.
